Painted Mask Pumpkins

Boo! The kiddos favorite season just got that much cuter on our steps with these painted mask pumpkins. They add a ton of cuteness and a little bit of mystery to our Halloween steps.

PAINTING THE MASKS

Start with white pumpkins or paint some butternut squash white. I used a pencil to lightly trace the shape of the bandit masks from those great westerns like the Lone Ranger. Google “bandit masks” to get some examples of different shapes and either print those pictures, cut out the mask and trace it on to your pumpkin or free hand it. I chose to free hand the designs because the imperfectness adds a whole lot of cuteness in my humble opinion. Plus the other option was more work, haha!

Once you’ve got the rough outline, fill it in with black paint. I used black acrylic paint I had on hand and found if I watered it down slightly, it gave me a smoother line. Fill it in with undiluted paint. I did try a sharpie, I know someone is going to ask me that because my hubby did, but it wasn’t as deep and rich of a black as I was envisioning. The acrylic paint worked perfectly.

Let the paint dry, you can seal it with a matte clear coat spray if you’re worried about rain and get your decorating on. I didn’t bother with the acrylic spray and they were fine. I scattered a few up our steps to our dutch door. They sure look cute tucked in with some bats and crunchy leaves.

I hope this has inspired you try these painted mask pumpkins for your Halloween decorations this year. If not, join my friends below on this fun pumpkin blog hop. Beautiful images by Ruth Eileen Photography.
