Jelly Bean Bunnies

It’s springtime and that means Easter is around the corner. I’m in project land and having some creative fun while we all shelter in place. In between school work and yard play we’re doing little crafts to keep our sanity. By “we” I mean, mostly “me,” haha. How are you hanging in there? These darling little jelly bean bunnies are perfect for tucking in an Easter basket. I wish it could be a gift we send home with classmates but that’s looking less and less likely as school closures extend and the pandemic ramps up.

So let’s focus on good and lovely things shall we? With attempts at keeping life as normal as possible for the little people in our lives, I think it helps our sanity as well. An Easter basket is a cute tradition but definitely not the why behind our Easter celebrations. Having little gifts for each of them is something I enjoy immensely though and something that delights their hearts, one I intend to keep even in the midst of the chaos in the world.

It may feel a bit overwhelming right now to try and pull off “normal” when a grocery store run just about drives you into a full fledged anxiety attack. If you’re scratching your head and wondering what the heck to even do, I’ve got an Easter basket gift guide up with some wonderful, easy ideas that don’t break the bank. We don’t do much–a new book, something artsy like sidewalk chalk or stickers and a tiny treat tucked in, like these adorable marshmallow carrots or…ta da, this jelly bean bunny.

JELLY BEAN BUNNIES

I found these adorable bubble glasses on Amazon and got the Yum Earth brand jelly beans. They came right to my door and I had all the rest on hand to put together this sweet little treats DIY.

Start by filling up your bunnies. I love the Yum Earth brand because they don’t contain food dye–they’re flavored and colored with fruit juice.

To make the rabbit ears, cut out two similar ear shapes about 1.5″ long out of white card stock. Hot glue these on top of the lid. Next make a slightly smaller version of the ears cutting them out of light pink paper. I literally used a thank you envelope I had in my desk drawer. In front of the ears I tucked in a tissue paper rose (which I’ll show you how to do below) and some sprigs of lavender.

I made the paper rose by cutting out about 10 or so oval-shaped pieces from tissue paper. Roll the first one like you’re making a enchilada except without tucking the ends in and glue closed with a dab of hot glue. Now it’s all about adding the petals. Really all that this entails is adding a little hot glue to the bottom half of each oval and overlapping them slightly above the petals already attached to that first rolled piece. This gives you a staggered, rose look you can see come together in the pictures above. Nothing about this has to be perfect. When you’ve got something close to a rose, hot glue it in front of the rabbit ears.

Now tie below the lid, a velvet ribbon and add a little cotton ball tail. They couldn’t be any cuter and are a sweet way to add a sweet to your little one’s basket.
