Peony Arrangements & Vase Finds

Is there anything better than peony season!? I’ll take an arrangement in every corner please. I’ve been seeing them in my local grocery store for the last month and held off as mine have been so close to opening. But I couldn’t resist any longer and wanted to use them in a pretty spring arrangement for this post. A few months ago I found this vintage clay vessel (similar here) on Etsy and it’s been my go-to vase since. If you’re looking for a great vase, I’ve gathered some other lovely ones for peonies below on this peony arrangements and vase finds blog post.

You can turn any vessel into a vase. I love the texture and age of this vintage vase but didn’t want to find out the hard way if it was water tight. Tuck a smaller glass into the opening and you can arrange away without water damage. I used one of our regular drinking glasses.

I picked up some Wax flowers (a filler flower) and Peonies (the Showstopper flower) at my local grocery store. From my yard I plucked some greenery, lilacs and used some almost spent Butterfly Ranunculus I had left over from Mother’s Day. Shop your yard first or go on a walk and then decide if you need anything from the store or local farmstand. You can see some more yard pickings on this summertime arrangement blog post from last year.

THE FOUNDATION

Start with greens. Always start with greens. It creates a framework that holds your blooms. For this arrangement I did not need any chicken wire or floral tape but you may depending on your vase of choice. I tend to use three sprigs of greens fairly often because it’s enough filler and creates a foundation without making your arrangement overly “leafy.” You want those flowers to be the spotlight.

THE FILLER

The filler is really a two part process. Right after my greens I add some filler flowers but I don’t use all of what I’m intending to need because you truly do want to “fill in” once you’ve got your showstopper blooms in. In this arrangement it was a sprig of lilac I grabbed from my yard (only on one side of the vase) and then wax flowers around the perimeter of the vase.

THE SHOWSTOPPER

I’m not sure there are many who would disagree with Peonies as the showstopper flower. They’re just so lovely. Mine were not very open which means I’ll get a longer vase life. Anticipate if you use more closed ones that they will open. Give them a little room to do just that. I like to put them in a grouping of three, low and slightly off center for a more symmetrical and pleasing look. Add the tighter buds over the rest of the arrangement, some cut longer than others for height difference. A word of caution: it can be tempting to buy the very tight buds at the store however I’ve had many instances of them not opening at all before they wilt away. You want them opening a tad.

THE WHIMSY

At this point I add the delicate, whimsical flowers usually sticking off to the sides for movement. They have longer stems and are more fragile. Some good examples would be Cosmos, Chamomile, Daisies, and these stunning Butterfly Ranunculus. Add them to your arrangement to loosen it up.
