Paper Heart Valentine’s Day Decor

It’s that time of year where it’s totally appropriate to tape paper hearts to your laundry room door to make the kiddos smile and on this paper heart Valentine’s day decor post I’ll show you just what I did! This one was easy to make and looks adorable. I imagine it would be perfect on a mantel, playroom or up a few doors in your home. And being budget friendly–made with some paper, scissors, glue dots and acrylic paint, you may have everything you need on hand.

PAPER HEARTS

Start with card stock. I used a light blush from the craft store (similar to these ones on Amazon via an affiliate link) and traced some heart cookie cutters to get the shape. A heart shape is also easy to free-hand so don’t be afraid of this DIY. I stood back after adhering them to the antique door to our laundry room and they just didn’t quite have the pizazz I was hoping for. Sometimes my neutral loving heart gets the best of me. This is definitely prettier with some varied shades of pink and red.

ACCORDION PAINTED PAPER HEARTS

Luckily I stumbled upon a picture of DIY accordion paper hearts from Martha Stewart. They were easy to make and I used acrylic paints watered down to get the colors I wanted on the card stock.

Start by cutting your piece of paper into a pill capsule shape. I cut pieces of card stock into larger rectangles (ex. 5 x 7 or 4 x 8 inch sizes) and rounded the edges to create the pill shape.

Using watered down acrylic paint I brushed the card stock to color it and let it dry.  Some I did in lighter shades of pink or red, others a more Ombré look. Once they’re dry you can begin folding them.

Fold them like you’re making a paper fan, accordion-style. Pinch them in half and secure closed with dabs of hot glue 3/4 up the middle seam so you have a heart shape.

The accordion fan hearts were heavier than the cut out hearts so I used tiny dabs of hot glue to hold them in place on my door. It’s a bummer to put them all up perfectly and walk back around the corner 5 minutes later and find them all on the floor. Low heat hot glue didn’t damage the surface of my painted door but definitely check yours first in an inconspicuous place. I used these glue dots to put the regular paper hearts up.
