Acorn Turkey Place Card Holders

How cute are these Acorn Turkey Place Card Holders!? An easy craft to add some whimsy to your Thanksgiving table. 100% gathered materials (except for hot glue), these came together quickly and were a big hit with my kiddos. I used some acorns I picked up on a fall walk, a bright red maple leaf and our neighbor’s pine cones. Don’t ask me what kind they are, I have no idea. They’re long and slender and much more pliable than your standard store pine cone. I found these ones on Etsy which look similar.

INSTRUCTIONS

I started by pulling the cone scale off. The first couple came off easily and then I cut a few off with a small pair of scissors. Nail scissors would work well for this task if you don’t have the small kind. You want to get the most scale off the cone as you can. It kinda makes a mess.

Some cute things come out of messes though. Once I had some scales, I laid my acorn on its side to see which side it would settle on. The stem on the little hat was pointing down and it wanted to sit like that so I made that the base. With little dabs of hot glue, start gluing the scales on so they’re pointing up, layering them so they start to look like tail feathers.

I probably used 15 or so scales layered so as to slightly overlap and trying to make them sit up past the acorn hat. Once I had the tail “feathers” in place. I cut a scale into a triangle to look like a beak, glued it on and cut a triangle of maple leaf to glue under it for that “gobble gobble” part. Two little black dots for eyes and its a sweet addition to your table settings! I’m planning to use a cute edged tag I have for the actual holiday but I was so excited to photograph it I didn’t bother tracking those down in my craft cupboard.
