A “Spooky” Halloween Table

There’s something fun about walking into your dining room and being greeted by a lively scene. A little consortium of ghosts spooking away. Easy to make, inexpensive and fun for kids and adults alike, these definitely steal the Halloween show this year and are the perfect table runner.

The first thing you notice when you enter the dining room is this friendly gathering of cheesecloth ghosts running down the table. This completely kid-friendly craft satisfies messy little boys’ art habits and makes for some pretty cool Halloween decorations for momma. Cheesecloth ghosts are not new, they’ve been done for ages and there are nothing short of 3 trillion Youtube videos and blog posts on how to make the perfect ghost. Everyone does it slightly differently but you end up with the same product–stiffened cheesecloth in the shape of a ghost. I bought cheesecloth and Aleene’s fabric stiffening and draping liquid and then used slightly inflated balloons taped to tin foil “arms” sitting in a large cup or vase. Once they were hardened, 24 hrs later, I cut out black paper eyes and hot glued them on. I referred to these posts to help make them: Martha Stewart and Hunt and Host.

The table settings come together with chalkboard place mats I had left over from Cade’s Penguin Party, my white pumpkin plates from Potterybarn, and some black spray-painted ivy from the backyard. Together they set a pretty cute, teeny bit spooky Halloween table, especially when sunlight shines through the ghosts.

And the good news: when you get sick of them on your table, string them up and hand them outside. Ours are still swaying away in the breeze. These happy ghosts were captured by the oh-so-talented Ruth Eileen Photography, even in the gloomy weather in early fall, Ruthie was able to capture these spooks.
