Upgrade Grocery Store Flowers

Flowers often make their way into my shopping cart when I’m picking up groceries to feed this crew. I come home, put the haul away and then get to work finding a home for some pretty flowers. Always a joy but putting them in a vase is rarely where I leave it. Even in the dead of winter I head out to the yard or on a walk, clippers in hand to grab some ivy or the variegated leaves of our Cornus Alba “Ivory Halo”, perhaps branches of maples turning their rich shades in fall or cedar branches in winter. We’ve got ivy growing like a weed along the perimeter of our yard and that is one of my favorites to pick and add to a grocery store arrangement. It adds immediate romance and whimsy. Yard clippings are an easy way to upgrade grocery store flowers.

I tend to skim over the premade bunches of many different, somewhat ordinary flowers and head for the ones that are more unique or simply all of one kind. That’s what I did with this bunch of camomile. The tiny daisies are so delicate and lovely, I couldn’t resist them.

I headed out to the yard and in about 38 seconds, had picked a few sprigs of ivy, some Cornus Alba and headed back inside to get to work. Almost everyone has some kind of greenery in their yard or available nearby trailing over the sidewalk.

Once inside I got to work with my clippers handy and the beautiful bubble vase (it’s no longer available but here’s a similar option). Sometimes simple is the most lovely.

I tucked in a few aging sprigs of cream carnation I got from Trader Joes a few weeks back. These guys last forever. Just a couple, three to be precise, asymmetrically placed next to the chamomile look lovely. This arrangement is making the rounds.

You’re sure to see it in many different spots over the next week or so. I love it. And just the other night we had it outside for a smores party. Thank you Ruth Eileen Photography for capturing the lovely in an ordinary trip outside to upgrade these grocery store flowers. And a thank you to Janine, Leslie and Ashley for having me along on this lovely blog series.
