Aubrey’s Unicorn Party

Sweet sweet Aubrey turned four with a magical Unicorn Party a few weeks ago. It was pink and sparkly and couldn’t have been more fun with a surprise visit from an actual “unicorn” and her sweet cousin. Aubrey was adamant about a unicorn party. Turns out she’s becoming quite opinionated in her old age. Who can blame her though, what little girl doesn’t love unicorns?! I’m pretty sure I had a unicorn wallpaper border in my room growing up. Keep reading for all the DIYs, details and touches that made Aubrey’s Unicorn Party a lovely day!

THE KID’S TABLES

Pink, purple, periwinkle and peach were the colors of the day. And they looked beautiful together! The kid’s tables were so fun to put together. As always, we used our natural wood kids tables / chairs. We use them for almost every kid’s party and are 6+ years old at this point.

I did order 2 sets of rattan chairs from HomeGoods and spray painted them pink. I used a roll of iridescent cellophane wrap as the runner. Topped it with beautiful homemade floral arrangements and a dusting of confetti. I topped the Ditsy Floral Plates with smaller Unicorn Paper Plates and different colors of small scalloped napkins (lilac, dusty pink, soft lilac, candy pink). The iridescent paper cups and gold straws get a design upgrade with a tiny bit of ribbon tied onto the straw.

Madison Rae Photography, in addition to the beautiful photography, added the calligraphy names on the wooden unicorn shapes. Book her today, she’s a gem!

DESSERT TABLE

An inexpensive folding table covered in pretty lavender fabric (6 yards) and a sparkly sequin mesh fabric (2 yards) set the foundation for this sparkly dessert table. I used our same backdrop from last year, Aubrey’s Snowflake Party and used fabric pins to tac the fresh flowers up there, reminiscent of a rainbow in addition to confetti, iridescent stars and glitter paper stars. The only thing I had intended to do but forgot day of was add flowers to the unicorn’s mane. I made the cupcakes and added these rice paper hydrangeas, used frosting to “glue” on meringues to foam cones covered in foil and added some lovely rainbow lollipops.

Lizzie’s Bakery made the lovely cakes which were topped with this beautiful handmade rainbow topper, golden stars, acrylic unicorn and lavender dipped beeswax candles.

The cookies were made by the talented Flour’d Bakery. Bethany did a beautiful job matching the color palette and magic of the day. I just love those floral rainbows!

MAGICAL BRUNCH FOODS

Tatte Bakery catered the sandwiches & croissants and Blackbird Donuts delivered a sweet treat, also known as Aubrey’s favorite food. Star sandwiches for the kids and mixed berries finished the brunch.

And while we’re at it, one might as well wear a cute scalloped unicorn horn to eat that brunch! I bought these unicorn horn party hats and pulled out the ribbon, removing the neon colors and replacing with silk ribbon in our softer party colors. Don’t hesitate to alter store bought finds to make them your own!

MANTEL DECOR

This is probably my finest balloon garland to date. And the key was blowing up the balloons completely full and then letting at least 1/2 to 3/4 of the air out so the finished balloons were much smaller. The garland lasted two weeks and looked lovely, we kept it up for Valentine’s Day. Balloon garlands aren’t hard to do but they do take time and you get better with experience, just like anything. I buy American made balloons from this Etsy seller and this was the 10-12 ft length. Also of note, these unique colors of balloons happen when the maker double stuffs the balloons, combining two colors to get a different shade. I accidentally unstuffed one of the “Vintage Rose” colored balloons, blew it up and loved the color more so I unstuffed the rest of that particular color. Blow some up smaller and larger for that varied effect. This particular garland looks nice because it is both an ombre-colored look and the balloon size tapered smaller on the ends.

UNICORN CRAFT TABLE

We set up the breakfast nook with a craft station for Aubrey’s Unicorn Party where the little girls could add yarn to a unicorn’s mane, color a 3D paper unicorn, or make sparkly jewelry. Pretty beads, sparkly stickers and pastel yarn looked lovely on this stripe tablecloth.

A UNICORN VISIT

We rented a “unicorn” for an hour as an activity for the kiddos. There are some cute unicorn pony ride companies in the Boston Metrowest area. We used Paul’s Pony Parties. The kid’s loved taking turns riding this sweet “unicorn.” And we lucked out on the weather for this late January birthday, remember Aubrey’s Snowflake party last year was postponed due to a blizzard?

PARTY PURSE FAVORS

Probably my favorite party favor to date, these were just so cute and filled with charming goodies! I bought the purses wholesale in packs of 10 to save money and I got them in 3 colors: the blue, pink and lavender. One of my favorite additions was homemade glitter play dough packaged in small glass jars in iridescent cellophane bags with a mini unicorn cookie cutter. I also added unicorn wands, sparkly tattoos, wooden unicorns, unicorn soap which I put in these starry bags, unicorn bubbles and some adorable unicorn hair bows, many of these from small Etsy shops.

ODDS & ENDS

I used these chiffon runners (Rose, Dusty pink, Dusty blue, Light Peach) from Amazon cut into strips to layer on the chandelier in our family room. This added a colorful, ethereal feel to the party tables.

I made the sign by the Dutch door and the mantel with pieces of scrap wood painted in iridescent watercolors and sticker letters from Hobby Lobby. Iridescent cellophane stars and sparkly scrapbook paper, the same thing I did for the dessert table backdrop, added a sparkly touch. I hope you’ve enjoyed Aubrey’s Unicorn Party and it inspires you in some way.
