A Melted Crayon Splatter Heart Garland

I’ve been meaning to update the kid’s playroom shelves for Valentine’s Day and get a craft under my belt, it only took a polar vortex to make it happen. I hope you are all safe and warm! Is there anything cuter than a melted crayon splatter heart garland to celebrate the season? Easy, inexpensive, all stuff I had on hand, this garland came together quickly and looks adorable in the kid’s playroom. Add some love books and voila, cuteness overload.

SUPPLIES

White Cardstock

Crayons (in shades of pink, purple, peach, even pearl or glitter crayons)

Hot Iron (mine is cordless)

Scissors

Hot Glue

Ribbon

Heart shape cookie cutter (or wing it!)

Pencil sharpener (or knife to finely chop crayon)

INSTRUCTIONS

Start by laying out two pieces of white card stock side by side and unpeeling your crayons so you can easily shave them onto the paper. I used the kid’s pencil sharpener and peeled pieces of crayon all over one of the pieces of cardstock. I chose different shades of similar colors, even some shimmery crayons. I then used a knife to cut slightly thicker bits of crayon which when melted make bigger circles.

Once I had a nice smattering of crayon shavings all over the paper I laid the second piece of card stock over the top.

Heat up your iron. I had no problem laying the iron right on top of the paper but if you’re worried about ruining your iron you could lay a towel over the top of the paper and then iron. It took only a few seconds to melt the crayon and the resulting pattern looked like splatter paint. The kid’s loved it!

I didn’t have a giant heart hole punch so I traced cookie cutters onto the back of my paper and cut them out with scissors.

Once I had a handful of hearts I started making the garland in place in the playroom. I strung a ribbon on my shelf and using a hot glue gun, spaced them evenly and glued them on. Then it was time to grab every pink, red or love book in our home.

And it’s that easy! A melted crayon splatter heart garland with our love books make for a sweet Valentine’s Day-themed bookshelf.
